Importance of Vitamin D3 & Calcium

Calcium Chaos written by Dr William Davis, author of "Track Your Plaque" [NEW]

"A recent study from New Zealand reported an experience with 1,471 postmenopausal women, mean age of 74 years, who were randomized to treatment with either calcium supplements or placebo. Calcium was supplied as calcium citrate (Citrical) to provide 1000 mg of (elemental) calcium per day (400 mg morning, 600 mg evening)."

"Over 5 years, women taking calcium had twice the risk of having a heart attack compared with women taking the placebo; women taking calcium had a 47 percent higher risk of having any one of three "events" (heart attack, stroke or sudden death) than women in the placebo group." Astaxanthin exhibits strong free radical scavenging activity and protects against lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage of LDL-cholesterol, cell membranes, cells, and tissues."

B Vitamins & Homocysteine  [Link Updated]
There is some evidence that B vitamins, including folic acid, B6, and B12,
may help lower blood levels of a substance called homocysteine.

B3 (Niacin) [Info Updated]
Niacin can play an important role in ridding the body of toxic and harmful chemicals.  Niacin is effective in improving circulation and reducing LDL particle number (measured as apoprotein B)
. " LDL particles vary in size—big, medium, and small. The size difference is crucial. Small LDL particles are a far more destructive force than their larger counterparts. Like finely tuned weapons designed to wreak maximum damage, smaller particles more effectively penetrate the cellular barrier and enter arterial walls, contributing to atherosclerotic plaque. They also persist longer in the circulation, which allows more opportunity to cling like little magnets to tissues within the walls."
Caveat: Niacin can elevate homocysteine levels.

B5 - (Pantethine - Co-Enzyme B5)
Pantethine is useful for: Increasing HDL, thus creating a more favorable Chol/HDL ratio which is the atherogenic index of your body. Reducing cardiovascular risk by inhibiting platelet clumping & the production of the inflammation producing chemical, thromboxane A2. Source:

Betaine (aka TMG)
Betaine is a nutrient that plays an important role in the health of the cardiovascular system, working in conjunction with folic acid, B6, B12 and zinc. Betaine, along with these nutrients, helps to reduce potentially toxic levels of homocysteine (Hcy). Dietary sources of betaine include beets, broccoli, spinach and some wines (beet sugar added to increase alcohol content).

Bromelain breaks down fibrin by stimulating the production of plasmin, which breaks down fibrin, thereby preventing fibrin from producing localized swelling. Plasmin also blocks the formation of pro-inflammatory compounds. Source...

Capsicum from 'World's Healthiest Foods'
Cayenne pepper: Cardiovascular Benefits ~ "Cayenne and other red chili peppers have been shown to reduce triglyceride levels, and platelet aggregation, while increasing the body's ability to dissolve fibrin, a substance integral to the formation of blood clots."
Page updated: 12/19/03

Choline may be oxidized in the body to form a metabolite called betaine.  Betaine is a source of methyl (CH3) groups required for methylation reactions. Methyl groups from betaine may be used to convert homocysteine to methionine.

Cinnamon  from 'World's Healthiest Foods'
[Updated ~ Several varieties of Cinnamon]
Anti-Clotting Actions, Anti-Microbial Activity, Blood Sugar Control, Cinnamon's Scent Boosts Brain Function. 1 gram per day (approximately 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon), produced an approximately 20% drop in blood sugar; cholesterol and triglycerides were lowered as well.

NOTE: There are several varieties of Cinnamon
Common Cinnamon [C. cassia] is the less potent source and the one you should take as described above.  True Cinnamon [Cinnamomum zeylanicum] is much more potent and should be used with caution. Cinnamon in the form of essential oils should not be consumed.

Homocysteine, Folic Acid and Cardiovascular Disease
Dietary folic acid and vitamins B-6 and B-12 have the greatest effects. Several studies found that higher blood levels of B vitamins are related, at least in part, to lower concentrations of homocysteine.

K2 (Menaquinone or Menatetrenone)
Vitamin K2 impedes atherosclerosis, protects arteries from calcification and increases bone mineral density. Highest level of dietary K2 is found in fermented soy 'natto'. Human studies show that vitamin K2 is absorbed up to ten times more than K1.
